Yayoi Kusama (b. 1929) has become one of the most famous and widely exhibited stars of the art world in recent decades. Pop art, ZERO, performance art: she has played a key role in various movements.
The immediate reason for this exhibition is Kusama’s infamous 1967 performance, in which she painted dots on the naked body of artist Jan Schoonhoven. Kusama lived in the United States at the time, but exhibited more often in the Netherlands than in America and had close relationships with Dutch artists such as Schoonhoven and Henk Peeters. The exhibition brings Kusama’s role as a pioneer and cult heroine to life.
